Why These Pretzel Pigs Will Be Your New Favorite
- Unforgettable Flavor: The combination of salty pretzel crust, juicy mini sausages, and melted cheddar cheese creates a taste sensation that’s truly addictive.
- Effortlessly Easy: Using store-bought pizza dough simplifies the process, making this a beginner-friendly recipe that delivers impressive results.
- Crowd-Pleasing Perfection: These mini appetizers are universally loved by kids and adults alike, making them ideal for any social gathering.
- Versatile for Any Occasion: From casual family nights to upscale events, these pigs in a blanket adapt beautifully.
- Make-Ahead Friendly: Prepare them in advance and simply reheat for last-minute entertaining, saving you time and stress.
The Secret to Pretzel Perfection: The Baking Soda Bath
The magic behind the authentic pretzel crust lies in a seemingly unusual, yet crucial, step: the baking soda bath. After wrapping your cheesy little smokies in pizza dough, each mini “pig” takes a quick dip in boiling water infused with baking soda. This alkaline solution is what gives traditional pretzels their signature dark, shiny crust and distinct chewy texture. Don’t skip this step – it’s the key to transforming ordinary dough into that wonderfully authentic pretzel experience you crave. It’s a simple technique that yields incredible results, proving that sometimes, the best culinary tricks are the most unexpected!
Can I Make Pretzel Pigs In A Blanket Ahead Of Time?
Absolutely! One of the many fantastic qualities of these pretzel pigs in a blanket is their excellent make-ahead potential. These bite-sized appetizers reheat remarkably well, maintaining their delicious flavor and texture even a couple of days after baking. To enjoy them later, simply arrange the baked and cooled pigs in a blanket on a baking sheet. Warm them up in a preheated oven at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 10 to 15 minutes, or until they are heated through and the cheese is gooey again. This makes them an ideal choice for meal prepping party snacks or ensuring you have a quick bite ready whenever hunger strikes. Always ensure they are thoroughly heated before serving for the best experience.

Perfect for Every Occasion
There’s truly no “wrong” occasion to whip up a batch of these scrumptious Pretzel Pigs In A Blanket. Their bite-sized nature and universally appealing taste make them a fantastic appetizer for casual get-togethers and more structured events alike. Guests adore grabbing a few of these savory snacks at potlucks, backyard barbecues, or holiday parties. They vanish quickly, so consider making an extra batch!
Beyond adult gatherings, these also make incredible after-school snacks for kids, especially if you have growing teens with substantial appetites. Imagine the joy on their faces when they come home to warm, cheesy, pretzel-wrapped sausages! When their friends visit, serving a few generous batches of these will undoubtedly earn you the title of Mom or Dad of the year. They’re a comforting, satisfying treat that beats any pre-packaged snack.

And let’s not forget the ultimate occasion for these munchies: GAME DAY! Whether you’re hosting an epic football party, gathering with friends to watch basketball, or heading to someone else’s house, a platter of Pretzel Pigs In A Blanket is an absolute must-bring. If you live in a sport-centric city, these are essential for your tailgating party, providing perfect portable fuel for cheering on your team. They’re also ideal for snacking on the sidelines if your kids play sports – a quick, energy-boosting bite that’s far more exciting than a granola bar. No matter the scenario, you simply can’t go wrong with these crowd-pleasing appetizers. My biggest piece of advice: wherever you go, make sure to bring enough to share… or maybe a secret stash just for yourself!

Pro Tips for Perfect Pretzel Pigs
- Even Dough Distribution: Ensure your pizza dough is cut into equal pieces. This helps with even cooking and consistent pretzel wraps.
- Tight Sealing: When wrapping the dough around the cheese and sausage, pinch the seams tightly to prevent the cheese from oozing out during baking.
- Don’t Over-Boil: The baking soda bath should be a quick dip (20-25 seconds). Over-boiling can make the dough tough.
- Use Parchment Paper: Lining your baking sheet with parchment paper prevents sticking and makes cleanup a breeze.
- Coarse Sea Salt is Key: The coarse salt provides that authentic pretzel texture and burst of flavor. Don’t substitute with fine table salt.
- Shallow Cuts: The small cut across the top helps the pretzel open slightly and brown beautifully, giving it that classic soft pretzel look. Make sure not to cut all the way through!

Summary
These Pretzel Pigs In A Blanket take two of your favorite party foods and combine them into one! Mini sausages and cheddar cheese wrapped in dough and baked to perfection!
Ingredients
- 4 ounces cheddar cheese
- 18 ounces premade pizza dough
- 36 Little Smokies sausages
- 10 cups water
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- Coarse salt
- Maple Dipping Sauce Recipe (optional, for serving)
Instructions
- Cut the cheddar cheese into 36 small square pieces and set aside.
- Divide the premade pizza dough into 36 evenly sized pieces.
- Flatten each piece of dough. Place one square of cheese and one Little Smokies sausage in the center of each dough piece. Carefully wrap the dough around the cheese and sausage, pinching the seams tightly to seal.
- Preheat your oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. In a large pot, combine the 10 cups of water and 1/2 cup of baking soda. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
- Working in batches of 6, carefully drop the dough-wrapped sausages into the simmering baking soda water. Cook for 20 to 25 seconds per batch. Use a slotted spoon to remove the pigs in a blanket from the water and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess water. Repeat until all the pigs in a blanket have been boiled.
- Transfer the drained pigs in a blanket to the prepared baking sheet. Using a paring knife, make a shallow cut across the center of each one, being careful NOT to cut all the way through the sausage.
- In a small bowl, gently whisk together the large egg and 1 tablespoon of water to create an egg wash. Brush the top of each pig in a blanket with the egg wash, then generously sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the pretzel pigs in a blanket are golden brown and puffed. Serve warm with Maple Mustard Sauce or your favorite dipping sauce.
