These Chocolate Peppermint Cheesecake Cream Horns offer a delightful dessert experience, combining a crisp, flaky pastry shell with a luscious peppermint cream cheese filling, all finished with a decadent chocolate dip and festive peppermint candy crunch.

Ingredients

  • 1 15-oz. package puff pastry dough, thawed
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp water
  • 1/2 cup + 2 tbsp granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup crushed peppermint candies or candy canes
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 8-oz. package Philadelphia Cream Cheese, softened
  • 2 tsp peppermint extract
  • You will also need cream horn molds. I recommend at least 12-18 molds for efficient preparation.

Instructions

  • Begin by preheating your oven to a precise 450 degrees F. Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper, then set it aside. Carefully unfold one sheet of the thawed puff pastry dough onto a lightly floured surface. Use a rolling pin to gently smooth out any visible creases in the dough, ensuring an even thickness. With a pastry or pizza cutter, slice the dough into uniform ½-inch-thick strips. Repeat this process for the second sheet of dough.
  • Take one strip of pastry dough and securely pinch one end to the pointed tip of a cream horn mold. Begin to wrap the dough strip snugly around the mold, allowing each new layer to slightly overlap the previous one. Once one strip is almost used up, pinch the end of a new strip onto where the first one finishes, continuing to wrap until the entire mold is covered. Ensure the final end is neatly pinched into the dough to secure it. Each mold will typically require two strips of dough. Continue this wrapping process until all the pastry strips and molds are utilized. Arrange the wrapped horns on your prepared cookie sheet and place them in the freezer for 10 minutes to help the pastry hold its shape during baking.
  • As the freezer time approaches its end, prepare an egg wash by lightly beating the egg with 1 teaspoon of water in a small bowl. Remove the chilled horns from the freezer and, using a pastry brush, generously coat each one with the egg wash. This will give them a beautiful golden sheen. Then, sprinkle them evenly with 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar. Transfer the baking sheet to the preheated oven and bake for approximately 20 minutes, or until the cream horns achieve a rich golden brown color and are beautifully puffed. Carefully remove them from the oven and allow them to cool on their molds for about 5 minutes before handling further.
  • While the pastries cool slightly, prepare the chocolate dip. Place the chocolate chips in a small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in short 30-second intervals, stirring thoroughly after each interval, until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. To remove the baked pastry from its mold, gently grip the pastry with one hand and pinch the mold with the other, carefully pulling them apart to prevent breakage. Dip the wide opening of each pastry horn into the melted chocolate, coating the edges. Place the chocolate-dipped horns onto wax paper to set. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate-dipped edges with crushed peppermint candy pieces before the chocolate hardens. Repeat this delightful process for all the remaining cream horns.
  • While your pastries and chocolate are setting, prepare the luscious peppermint cream cheese filling. In a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, whip the heavy cream and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. Gently transfer this whipped cream to a separate small bowl and set it aside. In the same large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with the remaining 1/2 cup of sugar and the peppermint extract until the mixture is light, airy, and fluffy. Finally, gently fold the prepared whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture until just combined, being careful not to overmix and deflate the whipped cream. Transfer this creamy filling to a piping bag fitted with your desired tip. Pipe the decadent cream cheese mixture into each cooled cream horn, filling it generously. These delicious treats are best enjoyed within a few hours of preparation for optimal freshness, or they can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours.

Notes

Please note that 2 cream horns are considered 1 serving for nutritional purposes.
For a charming variation, you can create mini cream horns by using just one strip of pastry dough per mold. When making mini versions, reduce the chilling time in the freezer to 10 minutes and the baking time in the oven to approximately 10 minutes. All other steps in the preparation and filling process remain the same, ensuring you get delightful bite-sized treats. Consider making these for larger gatherings or dessert platters!
