Discover the Allure of Margherita Pizza

While I often gravitate towards pizzas boasting more adventurous and intricate flavor profiles, there are those moments when only the pure, unadulterated taste of a classic Margherita Pizza will do. It’s a craving for simplicity, for the harmony of fresh, earthy ingredients that truly defines this beloved Italian staple. The beauty of a Margherita lies in its ability to shine through its few, high-quality components, proving that sometimes, less is indeed more.

Margherita Pizza made with Pillsbury's Best Pizza Dough

Growing up, my father frequently made homemade pizza, a tradition I now appreciate more than ever. However, as a child, I was notoriously picky, especially when it came to the dough. My unwavering belief was that if the dough wasn’t exceptional, the entire pizza experience was compromised. I was the kid who constantly campaigned for takeout over homemade, convinced that no home kitchen could replicate the perfect crust. That all changed the day I discovered Pillsbury’s Best Pizza Dough. This refrigerated dough, fresh and made with quality ingredients, transformed my perspective. Suddenly, the allure of takeout faded, replaced by the exciting prospect of crafting delicious, fresh pizza right from my own oven!

The Game-Changer: Pillsbury’s Best Pizza Dough

The Pillsbury’s Best Pizza Dough is a relatively new addition to the refrigerated dough section of your local grocery store, and it has quickly become a household favorite. In my opinion, it stands out as the finest pre-made pizza dough I’ve ever encountered. Its quality and flavor elevate homemade pizza to an entirely new level, making it accessible even on the busiest weeknights. While the dough can be a tad stickier than some other brands, its ingenious packaging, which includes a sheet of parchment paper, makes rolling it out a breeze. This thoughtful design ensures a smooth, non-stick transfer to your baking sheet, setting the stage for a beautifully baked crust that rises perfectly and achieves that coveted golden-brown crispness.

Using a high-quality pre-made dough like Pillsbury’s eliminates the time-consuming process of making dough from scratch, which can often deter people from trying homemade pizza. It’s perfect for families, busy professionals, or anyone who simply wants a fantastic pizza without the fuss. The consistent results mean you can count on a delicious pizza every time, freeing you up to focus on perfecting your toppings and enjoying the cooking process.

Sauce and mozzarella on Margherita Pizza

Crafting Your Perfect Margherita: Crust, Sauce, and Cheese

When it comes to pizza, the crust is king for me. While Pillsbury offers a thin crust option, I invariably opt for their classic crust. As I mentioned, I’m all about the dough, and the classic crust provides that satisfying chewiness and structure that I adore. The way the edges puff up and get delightfully bubbly in the oven, especially with a light brush of olive oil, creates a simple yet deeply delicious foundation for the Margherita toppings. That golden, slightly crispy edge is a textural delight that perfectly complements the soft interior.

The simplicity of the assembly process is another major win: just unroll, top, and bake! After the initial bake of the dough brushed with olive oil, a layer of crushed tomatoes is spread, followed by fresh garlic and generous dollops of mozzarella. The fresh garlic, while not always part of the earliest traditional Margherita recipes, adds a wonderfully pungent and aromatic kick that enhances the overall flavor profile. The mozzarella, melting into gooey perfection, creates a beautiful white canvas against the vibrant red sauce, ready for the final touch of green basil.

Understanding Margherita Pizza: History and Authenticity

What Defines a True Margherita Pizza?

Pizza Margherita is not just any pizza; it is a quintessential Neapolitan pizza, proudly bearing the “Specialità Tradizionale Garantita” (STG) status from the European Union, which ensures its traditional ingredients and preparation methods are respected. The authentic recipe calls for a specific set of high-quality ingredients: San Marzano tomatoes, fresh mozzarella (ideally “Fior di Latte” from Agerola or buffalo mozzarella from Campania), fresh basil, extra-virgin olive oil, and sea salt. The distinct colors of these ingredients—red from the tomatoes, white from the mozzarella, and green from the basil—are not merely coincidental. They intentionally mirror the colors of the Italian flag, giving the pizza a profound cultural significance. While traditional purists might omit garlic, it has become a widely accepted and often preferred addition in many modern interpretations, adding an extra layer of flavor without detracting from the pizza’s classic essence.

The Royal Origin of Pizza Margherita

The captivating origin story of Pizza Margherita dates back to June 1889, when King Umberto I and Queen Margherita of Savoy visited Naples. During their stay, the Queen, weary of the elaborate French haute cuisine typically served at court, expressed a desire to taste the local cuisine—specifically, pizza. Raffaele Esposito, the owner of Pizzeria Brandi (formerly Pizzeria di Pietro e Basta Cosi), was commissioned to prepare pizzas for the royal couple. Eschewing the conventional pizzas of the time, Esposito created three different pizzas. The Queen’s favorite, and the one that would become legendary, was a pizza designed to honor her and the Italian nation. This particular pizza featured tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil—representing the red, white, and green of the recently unified Italian flag.

Queen Margherita was so delighted by this patriotic creation that she sent Esposito a formal letter of thanks. In homage to the Queen, Esposito proudly named his creation “Pizza Margherita.” This royal endorsement propelled pizza from a simple street food to a widely recognized and celebrated dish, forever changing its status and popularizing it throughout Italy and eventually, the world. It’s a testament to how simple, quality ingredients, thoughtfully combined, can achieve legendary status.

A Classic Margherita Pizza made with delicious dough, olive oil, crushed tomatoes, garlic, mozzarella, and basil always hits the spot when you need a quick and easy dinner recipe!

Ingredients

  • 1 package Pillsbury’s Best™ refrigerated classic crust pizza dough
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3/4 cup Muir Glen Organic crushed tomatoes
  • 3 cloves garlic finely chopped
  • 8 ounces fresh mozzarella pearls patted dry
  • 1/2 cup fresh small basil leaves

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Place oven rack in low position. Unroll dough with its oven-safe parchment paper onto an ungreased large cookie sheet (the dough bakes directly on the paper). Brush the dough generously with olive oil. Bake for 7 minutes. Carefully remove from oven.
  • Evenly spread the crushed tomatoes over the partially baked crust, leaving a small border for the crust. Distribute the finely chopped garlic over the tomatoes. Finally, top with the fresh mozzarella pearls.
  • Return the pizza to the oven and bake for an additional 13 to 18 minutes, or until the crust achieves a beautiful golden brown color and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Once removed from the oven, immediately scatter the fresh basil leaves over the hot pizza for maximum fragrance and flavor. Slice and serve hot.
