Embracing Nostalgia with a Modern Twist
Grilled cheese sandwiches hold a special place in my heart, evoking warm memories of childhood. Growing up, they were a cherished staple, especially after school. My Nana often had a plate ready for us, either classic grilled cheese or her famous peanut butter cracker sandwiches. The simplicity and comfort of those meals were something I could always count on. But as I’ve grown older, my palate has evolved, and so has my desire to experiment in the kitchen. Now, I love to infuse a bit more creativity into my grilled cheese creations.
And what better time to share an exciting new take on this timeless classic than during National Grilled Cheese Month in April? This particular recipe isn’t just a sandwich; it’s a celebration of flavor and a testament to how versatile humble ingredients can be. It takes the familiar comfort of grilled cheese and elevates it with unexpected, zesty notes, proving that sometimes, the best innovations come from blending tradition with a dash of daring.

The Genius Solution for Leftover Taco Night
In our household, it’s just the two of us, and I’ve found that many recipes, even my own dinner recipes, often cater to larger families of four or more. This frequently leaves us with extra ingredients, particularly after our weekly taco night. Tacos are a beloved staple, I’m sure for many of you as well, but what do you do with that leftover seasoned ground beef, diced tomatoes, or unused toppings? You could eat tacos again, but why not transform them into something entirely new and exciting? That’s where the Taco Grilled Cheese Sandwich comes in – it’s the perfect, ingenious solution for repurposing those delicious taco leftovers into a meal that feels fresh and incredibly satisfying.
This recipe is designed to minimize waste and maximize flavor. Instead of feeling like you’re eating “tacos again,” you’re enjoying a completely different culinary experience. The robust flavors of your leftover taco meat, combined with melty cheddar cheese and the exceptional texture of Sara Lee® Artesano™ Bread, create a sandwich that is comforting yet exciting. It’s an excellent way to breathe new life into ingredients you already have on hand, turning a simple leftover dilemma into a gourmet lunch or dinner opportunity.

The Secret to Success: Sara Lee® Artesano™ Bread
While the fillings are undeniably crucial, the foundation of any truly great grilled cheese sandwich lies in the bread, and for this Taco Grilled Cheese, Sara Lee® Artesano™ Bread is simply unparalleled. This isn’t just any bread; it’s a game-changer that elevates the ordinary to the extraordinary. Artesano™ Bread is crafted to be as close to homemade as you can find in stores, offering a bakery-quality experience with the convenience of a pre-packaged loaf.
Its thick, substantial slices are absolutely perfect for a loaded sandwich like this Taco Grilled Cheese. Unlike thinner breads that might crumble under the weight of hearty fillings, Artesano™ Bread provides the necessary structure and resilience to hold everything together beautifully, ensuring every bite is satisfyingly robust. Beyond its structural integrity, the soft, rich texture and subtle sweetness of the bread perfectly complement the savory, spicy taco fillings, creating a harmonious blend of flavors and textures.
What’s more, you can feel good about choosing Sara Lee® Artesano™ Bread. It’s made without artificial colors, artificial flavors, and without high-fructose corn syrup, making it a wholesome choice for your family. This commitment to quality ingredients not only contributes to its delicious taste but also provides peace of mind. The golden crust it achieves when grilled is simply magnificent, adding another layer of appeal to this already incredible sandwich. Finding Artesano™ Bread is easy; look for it in the grocery bread aisle. It often offers excellent value, providing the hearty taste of bakery bread without the premium price tag.

Customization is Key: Make it Your Own!
One of the greatest joys of tacos is their incredible versatility, allowing everyone to customize their meal exactly to their liking. The Taco Grilled Cheese Sandwich embraces this philosophy wholeheartedly. Just like with traditional tacos, you are the master of your sandwich destiny! Feel free to add or omit ingredients based on your personal preferences and what you have on hand. Love a little extra crunch? Add some crushed tortilla chips inside! Prefer more heat? A dash of hot sauce or an extra slice of jalapeño will do the trick.
However, a word of caution: when it comes to wetter ingredients like sour cream and salsa, it’s best to serve them on the side. Incorporating them directly into the sandwich can lead to a soggy mess, undermining the crispy perfection of a grilled cheese. Instead, create a delightful dipping experience! A small bowl of creamy sour cream or a zesty salsa on the side allows you to dip each bite, ensuring the perfect texture contrast and burst of flavor without compromising the integrity of your sandwich. Other great additions include finely shredded lettuce (added after grilling), black beans, or corn. The possibilities are truly endless!

Tips for the Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Achieving that perfectly golden, crispy exterior and wonderfully melted interior requires a few simple techniques. First, ensure your butter is softened; this allows it to spread evenly across the bread, preventing burnt spots and ensuring a uniform golden-brown crust. Second, cook your sandwiches over medium heat. This is crucial for allowing the cheese to melt slowly and thoroughly without burning the bread. High heat will char the outside before the inside is gooey and perfect.
Don’t overcrowd your skillet. Give each sandwich enough space to cook evenly. If you’re making multiple sandwiches, it’s better to cook them in batches. Patience is key – let each side cook undisturbed until it reaches that beautiful golden hue. The aroma alone will tell you it’s getting close! Once flipped, cover the pan for a minute or two; the trapped steam helps to melt the cheese even more efficiently, creating an incredibly satisfying, melty core for your taco fillings to nestle in. These small steps make a big difference, transforming a simple sandwich into a truly exceptional meal.

This Taco Grilled Cheese Sandwich can be customized just like a taco! The original recipe is packed with bold flavor and a little heat for a lunch or dinner that’s sure to leave your mouth watering!
Ingredients
- 8 slices Sara Lee® Artesano Bread
- 4 tbsp butter, softened
- 8 slices cheddar cheese
- 1/2 lb ground beef, seasoned for tacos (we always use leftovers!)
- 1 jalapeño pepper, diced
- 1 tomato, diced
- 1 avocado, peeled and sliced thin
- Sour cream and salsa for dipping
Instructions
- Butter one side of a slice of bread with the softened butter and place butter-side down in a medium non-stick skillet over medium heat.
- Add a slice of cheese to the bread. Spoon 1/4 of the seasoned beef, 1/4 of the diced tomatoes, and 1/4 of the diced jalapeño peppers over the cheese. Lay 1/4 of the avocado slices on top, then cover with another slice of cheese.
- Butter one side of another slice of bread and place it butter-side up on top of the cheese. Cook until the cheese begins to melt and the bottom bread turns a golden brown. Carefully flip the sandwich and cook the other side until the cheese is completely melted through and the bread is golden. Repeat this process for the remaining sandwiches.
