While many travelers shared insights about driving or flying, it was the ferry option that truly captured my attention. The best part? Booking our ferry tickets was incredibly easy, done directly through TripAdvisor’s user-friendly platform. Roundtrip tickets typically range from $65 to $93 per person, varying by age, offering a scenic and stress-free journey.

Ferry: Opting for the ferry proved to be an excellent choice. Departing conveniently from Boston Harbor at Long Wharf, it delivers you directly into the vibrant heart of Provincetown. The crossing itself is a swift 90 minutes, providing breathtaking panoramic views of the Boston skyline as you depart and a picturesque coastal approach as you arrive. The ferry boasts ample seating, including both indoor and outdoor areas with tables, allowing you to relax and enjoy the journey. A practical tip: consider bringing Sea Bands or Dramamine, especially if you’re prone to motion sickness, in case the waters are choppy.

Drive: In 1914, the construction of a canal physically separated Cape Cod from the mainland, though two convenient bridges now provide access. Fly: For those traveling from a distance and already flying into Boston’s Logan Airport, connecting to a flight with Cape Air might be the most time-efficient option for reaching Provincetown. These short flights across the bay offer convenience, though they are generally the most expensive choice, with fares starting around $80 per person each way. This option is best for travelers prioritizing speed and directness over budget.

Getting Around Provincetown, MA: Exploring with Ease

Once you’ve arrived in Provincetown, you’ll find a delightful array of transportation options, ranging from free and leisurely to more structured and budget-friendly choices. Our visit saw us utilizing a versatile mix of walking, Uber, and taxi services, tailoring our mode of transport to our itinerary and convenience.

Walk: Without a doubt, walking is the most popular and arguably the best way to experience Provincetown. The town’s compact nature means that many of its best restaurants, unique shops, and captivating art galleries are conveniently located along, or just a short stroll off, the bustling Commercial Street. Beyond the ease of access, walking offers the delightful bonus of interacting with the town’s famously friendly dog population – prepare for numerous opportunities to greet adorable pups along your route!

Bicycle: Another fantastic and enjoyable way to navigate Ptown is by bicycle. Many local inns and hotels thoughtfully provide complimentary bikes for their guests, and for those staying elsewhere, several rental shops are readily available. Biking allows you to cover more ground than walking, offering a refreshing way to explore the quieter side streets and scenic coastal paths.

Shuttle/Trolley: During our early June visit, the town’s shuttle and trolley services were not yet fully operational for the peak season, which was a slight miss for us (we visited Sunday through Tuesday). However, in just a few days, these services would commence running every 30 minutes, seven days a week, making stops at key locations around town. With day passes priced at an incredibly reasonable $6.00 per person, the shuttle and trolley offer an excellent, economical, and convenient way to get around without the hassle of parking. Be sure to check their stop locations and schedule for your visit!

Uber/Lyft: Both popular ride-sharing services are available on Cape Cod, including Provincetown. However, it’s worth noting that during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall), many drivers operate primarily on weekends. This meant we relied more heavily on local taxi services from Monday night through Tuesday afternoon. We found the average ride from the town center to our hotel was approximately $8 to $10, offering a convenient option when walking wasn’t feasible.

If you haven’t yet experienced the convenience of Uber or Lyft, I wholeheartedly recommend signing up. They are my go-to choice for getting around when I’m not in the mood for walking, offering a significantly more affordable alternative to traditional taxis in most cities. While I personally lean towards Uber, my husband prefers Lyft; essentially, they offer the same service, and many drivers work for both platforms. Taxi: Generally, I harbor a slight aversion to taxis, largely due to an unfortunate experience in Florida a few years ago that left a sour taste. However, sometimes there’s simply no better option. Thankfully, Provincetown’s taxi fares are town-mandated, providing reassuring transparency regarding costs, so you always know what to expect. We primarily used Pride Taxi (reachable at (508) 487-3400) during our stay, though several other companies also operate. The fares are consistent across all services and are calculated on a per-passenger basis. For instance, a ride from our hotel to the center of town cost us $7.00 per person, while the fare to the ferry terminal was $8.00 per person. Rates do vary slightly depending on your specific origin and destination within the town.

Drive: While Provincetown isn’t sprawling, and its main roads are relatively few, navigating by car can present its own set of challenges. The town has numerous one-way streets, and during peak season, both pedestrian and vehicle traffic can be substantial. Furthermore, parking can be a significant hurdle; we observed parking rates starting around $15.00 per day on various signs. For most visitors, especially those staying within walking distance of Commercial Street, leaving the car behind and utilizing other transport methods is often the most enjoyable and stress-free option.

For our visit, we chose to stay at the Harbor Hotel. This particular spot immediately caught my eye with its delightfully retro aesthetic, vibrant colors, and inviting atmosphere. The presence of a fire pit and a refreshing pool were definite bonuses, promising relaxed evenings and sunny afternoons.

Beyond its appealing style, the Harbor Hotel stood out as one of the best values in town, with rates starting at just $139.00 a night – an absolute steal compared to many other establishments we researched. The overwhelmingly positive reviews on TripAdvisor further solidified our decision, confirming it as an excellent choice for our stay. TripAdvisor truly streamlines the accommodation search, allowing you to compare the best prices from over 200 booking sites. Their real-time hotel price updates, 24/7, ensure you never miss out on a fantastic deal.

Our standard double queen room was both comfortable and impeccably clean, providing a perfect sanctuary after days of exploration. We especially appreciated the hotel’s location, offering a slightly quieter retreat from the busier, more bustling end of Commercial Street. The Harbor Hotel also prides itself on being pet-friendly, making it an ideal choice for those traveling with furry companions. Additionally, guests can take advantage of the complimentary bikes available, perfect for a leisurely ride into the town center, which is just a pleasant 15 to 20-minute walk away. It truly offered the best of both worlds: convenient access to all the action, coupled with a serene place to unwind.

Where To Eat In Provincetown, MA: A Gastronomic Journey

Ah, now we arrive at one of life’s true necessities and pleasures: food! Provincetown’s culinary landscape is nothing short of spectacular, boasting an abundance of incredible restaurants, charming cafes, and delightful treat shops. Here are my top recommendations for where to indulge your taste buds during your visit:

Joon Bar – This was unequivocally our favorite meal of the entire trip, and a truly delightful introduction to Provincetown’s dining scene. You absolutely, without a doubt, MUST order the Duck Sliders – they are simply divine, an explosion of flavor that will leave you craving more. We also shared their perfectly crispy frites and a refreshing house salad. (Yes, we indulged in two dinners that night because the choices were too enticing to pick just one!)
Ciro & Sals – If you find yourself yearning for authentic Italian cuisine, Ciro & Sals is the place to be. Its enchanting courtyard, draped in lush ivy and illuminated by twinkling lights, creates an incredibly romantic and picturesque setting. Step inside, and you’ll feel transported to an old-world Italian osteria, reminiscent of the charming trattorias nestled in the heart of Tuscany. My Burro e Formaggio dish was a testament to their simple yet exquisite flavors.
Edwige – We chose Edwige for one of our dinners, and while the meal was undoubtedly delicious, it didn’t quite reach the “mind-blowing” status. I savored the succulent rib cap steak (pictured above) paired with a unique cucumber soda. It was a bit on the pricier side, but the elegant ambiance and attentive service make it an excellent choice for a more romantic or intimate evening out.
Cafe Heaven – This spot is a very close second to Joon Bar in terms of our favorites – so much so that we ate here twice! Once for a hearty breakfast and again for a delicious lunch. Their pancakes, especially the raspberry pecan, are absolutely amazing, and the chicken and sweet potato hash is truly mouthwatering. For lunch, I enjoyed the flavorful cod sliders (pictured below), while my friend Jilly opted for one of their fresh, crisp salads. Both meals were utterly delightful!

The Canteen – Another fantastic lunch option (though they are open for breakfast and dinner as well), The Canteen offers a relaxed, cafeteria-style experience. You order at the counter, take a number, and your freshly prepared food is brought directly to your table. I highly recommend securing a spot out back in their charming picnic-style beachfront seating, offering stunning views. Their fish and chips were wonderfully crispy, and I overheard the couple next to us raving about the crispy Brussels sprouts – definitely something to try next time!
Liz’s Cafe Anybody’s Bar – Our brunch at Liz’s Cafe was an absolute hit. We devoured the Flippers and the Chicken and Waffles – everything was simply delicious. This place exudes a wonderfully fun and quirky atmosphere, enhanced by the fact that the bar itself is ingeniously crafted from an old boat!
Kohi Coffee – For those essential caffeine boosts to kickstart your day or power through the afternoon, Kohi Coffee is the undisputed champion. Their expertly brewed coffees are a local favorite.
Connie’s Bakery – Oh, Connie’s Bakery! Stepping inside is a true test of willpower, as everything looks incredibly tempting. We ultimately chose the “Carrot Ball,” a delightful creation resembling a classic childhood “Snowball,” but with a rich carrot cake interior, topped with luscious cream cheese frosting and shredded coconut. O.M.G. It was unbelievably good!
Relish Bakery – While we didn’t sample their baked goods on this visit, we did enjoy their homemade Blackberry Lemonade. It was perfectly tart, incredibly refreshing, and served as the ideal pick-me-up during our morning walk along the bustling streets.
PTownScoop – I simply cannot resist a perfectly crispy waffle cone filled with delectable, housemade ice cream. PTownScoop offers a plethora of exciting and unique flavors, but I ultimately settled on the creamy and delightful Strawberry Cheesecake.
Purple Feather Treatery – This charming spot specializes in artisanal gelato and an array of incredibly decadent, over-the-top desserts. We were particularly smitten with their rich and velvety chocolate mousse!
Provincetown Fudge Factory – While not a meal destination, the Provincetown Fudge Factory is an essential stop for any sweet tooth. Their peanut butter cups are legendary and absolutely amazing. Make sure to pop in and stock up on these sweet treats to bring a taste of Ptown home with you!

Provincetown and its surrounding areas offer a fantastic variety of activities. While our trip primarily focused on indulging in the incredible food and leisurely strolls, here are some highly recommended attractions and experiences that were suggested to us:

Shopping – Commercial Street is a treasure trove of unique boutiques, art galleries, and specialty shops. I highly recommend dedicating a couple of hours (or more!) to simply wander, browse, and discover handcrafted goods, local art, and charming souvenirs. It’s a fantastic way to soak in the town’s creative spirit.
Artemis Shipwreck – One morning, intrigued by a captivating photo I’d seen on Instagram, we embarked on a walk to see the Artemis shipwreck. This vessel tragically broke free of its moorings during a powerful Nor’Easter last March, ultimately coming to rest along the breakwater (as seen in the photo below). You can walk right up to it, offering a fascinating and somewhat haunting glimpse into recent maritime history. While town officials plan for its eventual removal, the considerable cost means it’s likely to remain a striking landmark for some time.

Provincetown Art Association and Museum – Located just a couple of miles outside the bustling town center, this esteemed art museum houses a rich collection of captivating exhibitions, showcasing both local and regional artistic talent. It’s a wonderful cultural excursion for art enthusiasts.
The Sand Dunes – Given Provincetown’s unique geological formation as a giant sandbar, the surrounding area is characterized by vast, undulating sand dunes. These provide an incredibly scenic backdrop for a leisurely walk, offering breathtaking vistas and a sense of peaceful solitude. For a more structured experience, consider booking an exhilarating tour with Art’s Dune Tours, which takes you deep into this protected natural landscape.
Cabaret – One of my biggest regrets was not realizing the importance of booking tickets for a cabaret show in advance! Numerous locals and visitors alike emphasized that experiencing the vibrant cabaret scene is an absolute must-do in Provincetown. With several theaters and box offices scattered around town, be sure to pop in early during your visit to check out the diverse options and secure your seats for an evening of unforgettable entertainment.
Pilgrim Monument – For a dose of history and unparalleled panoramic views, a visit to the iconic Pilgrim Monument and its accompanying exhibit is highly recommended. It’s just a short, but moderately steep, walk up the hill from Commercial Street. Entry costs $12.00 per adult, granting you access to explore the monument’s historical significance and ascend for spectacular vistas of the town and coastline.
