Why this recipe works

Frosty, fruity, and just the right amount of boozy, a well-crafted strawberry margarita makes one heck of a summertime sipper. This frozen strawberry margarita recipe can also be easily prepped in advance, which means you can make a couple of batches for a party and toss them in the freezer so you aren’t fussing with a blender while guests are over.

And alas, the debate will always stand – frozen or on the rocks? I think there’s an occasion for both, of course, but what could be better than a grown-up slushy on a hot day? Grab your favorite tequila, triple sec, and some frozen berries and let’s get started.

Ingredients for Strawberry Margarita

Ingredient Info and Substitution Suggestions

STRAWBERRIES – Frozen strawberries are ideal here, as they add to that slushy texture. However, you can certainly use fresh strawberries as well. If you are using fresh strawberries, you’ll want to increase the amount of ice to 3-4 cups instead of 2.

TEQUILA – The best advice is to use a tequila you enjoy the taste of, as it really comes down to personal preference. You want something that is going to enhance the flavor of this drink, so don’t choose something that you couldn’t muster on its own. We personally like to use silver tequila in ours as it’s clean and crisp, but reposado is another good choice.

LIME JUICE – Fresh is best for margaritas, but bottled lime juice will work in a pinch.

SALT – We prefer to salt the rim of margaritas, particularly with rimming salt, but you can easily substitute with granulated sugar if that’s what you prefer. If you don’t have rimming salt, you can use kosher salt or sea salt. Tajin or chili lime salt are also popular options.

Frequently Asked Questions & Expert Tips

Can you make frozen strawberry margaritas ahead of time?

Yes! It’s totally possible to freeze a batch or two if you are planning on serving them at a party. Prepare the margaritas as normal, then transfer the mixture to a large zip-top bag and freeze flat. Remove the bag from the freezer about 10 minutes before serving, giving it a good mix to come back to the original texture.

Can I make it a strawberry margarita on the rocks instead?

You can replace the frozen strawberries with fresh berries and make it on the rocks if preferred. Muddle your fresh strawberries instead of blending, and place all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker. Give it a good shake and pour over ice! You may need to separate the mixture into two batches depending on the size of your cocktail shaker.

Can I use fresh strawberries instead of frozen?

Absolutely. Personally, I have found that frozen strawberries are ideal when making a frozen margarita, as they add to the slushy texture without having to increase the amount of ice you use (which can sometimes water down the flavor). However, you can easily substitute with fresh strawberries, just increase the amount of ice you use to be around 3-4 cups, or until the desired consistency is reached.

Serving Suggestions

Serve your frozen strawberry margarita with a lime wheel and a fresh strawberry as garnish. Below are a few different options for rimming your margarita. Choose your favorite!

  • Salted Rim – Coarse salt or rimming salt.
  • Sweet Rim – Granulated sugar or colored sanding sugar.
  • Sweet & Spicy Rim – Tajin mixed with granulated sugar at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Spicy Rim – Tajin or other chili lime salt, bonus if you use Chamoy to wet the rim.
