Celebrate with Flavor: The Magic of Lunar New Year and Festive Feasts
The air buzzes with excitement as we usher in the Lunar New Year, an occasion steeped in rich tradition and profound cultural significance. Also known as the Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival, this holiday is a vibrant tapestry of family reunions, ancient customs, and, most importantly, incredible food that symbolizes prosperity, unity, and good fortune for the year ahead. Even for those without Chinese heritage, the allure of its customs, like the fascinating 12 zodiac symbols, is widely recognized, marking the start of a new animal cycle each year.

My childhood memories are dotted with delightful discoveries about the Chinese Zodiac. A common misunderstanding often arises when people assume their zodiac sign aligns with the Gregorian calendar year of their birth. However, the true determination is by the Lunar New Year. For instance, being born in 1989 places me in the Year of the Snake, further distinguished by the elemental sign of Earth. Each of these unique zodiac and elemental combinations is believed to impart specific personality traits and provide intriguing glimpses into the future. I often find myself nodding in agreement with the characteristics attributed to the Snake:
“Snakes are very creative and extremely diligent. Though Snakes work very hard, they have a tendency to be job-hoppers, as they easily become bored. Snakes are great thinkers. Complex problems stimulate them. And of course, they’re excellent problem-solvers and thrive under tight deadlines.” – China Highlights
This description resonates deeply with my experience running this blog. The dynamic nature of content creation, coupled with the constant stream of fresh opportunities and challenging projects, keeps me engaged and passionate. It’s a perfect fit for a “Snake” who thrives on intellectual stimulation and innovation. While 2016’s predictions for Snakes were described as “bittersweet,” I prefer to focus on the sweet moments and hope for an abundance of them!
The Heart of the Feast: Crafting Unforgettable Lemon Ginger Soy Chicken Thighs
No Lunar New Year celebration, or indeed any gathering worth its salt, is complete without an exceptional meal. This Lemon Ginger Soy Chicken Thighs recipe isn’t merely good; it’s a testament to the power of thoughtful cooking. Every step, from the initial preparation to the consistent basting during its slow roasting, is designed to imbue the chicken with maximum flavor and irresistible tenderness. This dish draws inspiration from revered Asian roasting techniques, ensuring the chicken emerges from the oven succulent, with a beautifully caramelized skin, all thanks to its homemade, aromatic basting sauce.

The magic truly happens with the sauce – a harmonious blend of Kikkoman Soy Sauce, pungent grated ginger, bright lemon juice, and luscious honey. Through my culinary explorations, especially with Asian flavors, I’ve learned that simplicity, when combined with quality ingredients, often yields the most profound tastes. Bone-in chicken thighs are a star choice for this recipe; their higher fat content ensures they remain incredibly juicy and absorb flavors wonderfully, creating a mouthwatering experience that leaner cuts might miss. Kikkoman Soy Sauce, a cornerstone of traditional Asian cooking, is key here. Its naturally brewed depth enhances the chicken’s inherent umami and encourages a rich, natural browning, transforming each thigh into a deeply flavorful, visually appealing masterpiece. It truly is the perfect ingredient to elevate this and all your Lunar New Year dishes.
While this recipe demands a touch of patient attention with its frequent basting, I assure you that the end result is profoundly rewarding. The basting process allows the delightful sauce to meld seamlessly with the chicken’s juices and olive oil, forming a fragrant, savory broth at the bottom of the pan. This exquisite liquid not only keeps the chicken moist but also perfectly roasts the accompanying bok choy and carrots, infusing them with exceptional flavor and tenderness. The vegetables emerge sweet, slightly caramelized, and incredibly delicious. For those who prefer other cuts, feel free to substitute with other bone-in chicken pieces, maintaining a total weight of approximately 2 lbs to ensure even cooking and optimal flavor saturation. Serve this dish with steamed rice to soak up every last drop of the glorious pan sauce, creating a complete and satisfying meal.

These Lemon Ginger Soy Chicken Thighs are slow roasted, tender, and bursting with flavor! The chicken thighs are basted throughout the roasting process with a simple sauce made with lemon, soy sauce, honey, and ginger. Roasted over a dish of bok choy and carrots, this dish is filled with Asian influence!
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided
- 2 cups bok choy, chopped
- 2 cups carrots, julienned
- ¼ teaspoon kosher salt, plus a pinch
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper, plus a pinch
- 4 bone-in chicken thighs (approximately 2 lbs total)
- 1 lemon (for roasting)
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice (for sauce)
- ¼ cup soy sauce (Kikkoman recommended)
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, peeled and grated
- 1 tablespoon honey
- Cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Drizzle 2 tablespoons of olive oil into a 3 to 4 qt. baking dish. Add the chopped bok choy and julienned carrots to the dish. Toss them with ¼ teaspoon of salt and ¼ teaspoon of pepper until evenly coated.
- Place the chicken thighs on top of the seasoned vegetables, ensuring the skin side is facing up. Drizzle the chicken with the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Season the chicken with a pinch of salt and pepper. Slice one lemon in half and place each half at opposite ends of the baking dish. Roast for 15 minutes.
- While the chicken roasts, whisk together the Kikkoman Soy Sauce, lemon juice, grated fresh ginger, and honey in a small bowl to create your basting sauce. After 15 minutes, carefully remove the baking dish from the oven. Using a basting brush, generously brush the chicken thighs with the prepared sauce and the pan drippings. Return the dish to the oven. Repeat this basting process every 5 minutes for an additional 25 to 30 minutes, or until the sauce is fully absorbed, and the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
Notes
- This recipe is versatile; other bone-in chicken pieces can be substituted. Aim for approximately 2 lbs total for best results.
