As a proud Princess Cruises Ambassador, I had the incredible opportunity to sail on the Inaugural cruise of the Sky Princess in October. It was during this unforgettable voyage that I discovered and fell completely in love with the Pink Gin Spritz. My mission is to share these extraordinary experiences and inspire you with recipes that bring the joy of cruising into your daily life. All opinions expressed are genuinely my own, born from a true passion for travel and delicious cocktails.

My Mediterranean adventure aboard the Sky Princess this past fall was filled with breathtaking sights, but the Pink Gin Spritz truly captured my heart. Its light, fruity essence, perfectly complemented by a subtle hint of citrus and the natural sweetness of fresh strawberries, made it an irresistible choice. This cocktail embodies the spirit of relaxation and indulgence that defines a premium cruise experience.

What Is Pink Gin? A Dive into its History and Flavor Profile

Pink gin, contrary to what some might assume, isn’t just gin that happens to be pink. Its origins are steeped in naval history, dating back to the mid-1800s with the British Royal Navy. Initially, it was believed to serve a medicinal purpose, primarily as a cure for seasickness among sailors. The original recipe was simple yet effective: Plymouth Gin infused with a dash of Angostura Bitters. The bitters, famous for their herbal complexity and vibrant red hue, imparted both flavor and the characteristic pink color.

Today, the concept of pink gin has evolved significantly. While Angostura Bitters remain a classic component, modern distillers have embraced a broader spectrum of botanical infusions to achieve both color and taste. You’ll find variations from popular commercial brands to artisanal craft distillers, each offering a unique twist. These contemporary pink gins often derive their color and sweet, fruity notes from ingredients like strawberries, raspberries, redcurrants, rose petals, or even rhubarb. This diverse range allows for a delightful exploration of flavors, making pink gin a versatile spirit perfect for crafting refreshing cocktails like our spritz.

Mastering the Spritz: Crafting Your Perfect Cocktail

The beauty of a spritz lies in its simplicity and refreshing qualities. This particular Pink Gin Spritz recipe is remarkably straightforward to prepare, yielding enough for four servings. This makes it an absolutely perfect choice for a lively “girl’s night in,” a relaxed summer evening on your patio, or a festive poolside gathering. Its effervescent nature and beautiful presentation make it a crowd-pleaser that requires minimal effort.

Step 1: Preparing Your Fruit and Carafe

Begin your cocktail creation by gathering your fresh ingredients. Take your sliced strawberries and lime wedges and add them to a spacious, ice-filled carafe. Before dropping the lime wedges in, make sure to squeeze all their vibrant juice directly into the carafe. This ensures maximum citrusy flavor permeates your drink, balancing the sweetness of the berries and soda.

Step 2: Adding the Pink Gin

Now, it’s time to introduce the star of our show: the pink gin. Onboard the Sky Princess, this particular spritz is crafted with The Bitter Truth brand pink gin. However, availability can vary, and I found a delightful alternative in Gordon’s pink gin here in the States. Gordon’s offers a slightly fruitier profile, which, in my opinion, only enhances the poolside enjoyment of this drink. There’s truly nothing wrong with a little extra fruitiness in a refreshing summer cocktail!

A crucial distinction to remember is not to confuse pink gin with sloe gin. While both may share a rosy hue, their flavor profiles are vastly different. Pink gin typically offers a crisp, often subtly sweet, and botanical taste with hints of red fruit. Sloe gin, on the other hand, is a liqueur made by infusing gin with sloe berries, resulting in a much sweeter, richer, and more plum-like flavor. For this spritz, you absolutely want the light and refreshing characteristics of a true pink gin.

Step 3: The Bubbles and the Finish

The final and perhaps most exciting step is adding the bubbles! Begin by pouring in the chilled Prosecco. This Italian sparkling wine provides a delicate effervescence and a sophisticated dryness that complements the gin and fruit beautifully. Once the Prosecco is in, top off the carafe with lemon-lime soda. The lemon-lime soda is not just for fizz; it’s an essential component that contributes a significant amount of the sweetness and a bright citrusy note that truly elevates this drink from good to great.

It’s important to resist the urge to substitute lemon-lime soda with plain soda water or club soda. While those might provide carbonation, they lack the inherent sweetness and distinct flavor profile that lemon-lime soda brings to the Pink Gin Spritz. The absence of this sweetness would dramatically alter the cocktail’s intended character, resulting in a much drier and less balanced drink. Once all ingredients are in, give the mixture a gentle stir to combine everything without losing too much of that precious fizz. Serve immediately in glasses filled with fresh ice and enjoy!

Can I Make This Pink Gin Spritz in Advance?

Due to the bubbly nature of its primary ingredients, the Pink Gin Spritz is best enjoyed immediately after preparation. The majority of this delightful drink is composed of prosecco and lemon-lime soda, both of which will rapidly lose their carbonation if left standing for too long. Serving and consuming it right away ensures you experience the invigorating fizz and crispness that makes a spritz so appealing.

However, if you’re planning a gathering and want a slight head start, you can absolutely prep some components in advance. Slice your strawberries and limes, and have them ready. You can even add them to your carafe along with the pink gin a little while before your guests arrive. Then, just before you’re ready to serve, add the ice, prosecco, and lemon-lime soda. This allows you to quickly assemble a fresh batch of cocktails, preserving their effervescence and ensuring a perfectly refreshing drink every time.

Unlike some cocktails, such as a traditional Sangria which often benefits from a longer chilling period to meld flavors, there’s no need to wait with this fruity gin spritz. You can pour yourself a glass and begin sipping this fantastic concoction right away, experiencing its full, vibrant flavor profile from the very first sip!

For those who prefer their cocktails on the sweeter side, here’s a little pro tip to customize your Pink Gin Spritz: simply add an ounce of simple syrup or grenadine. This will enhance the overall sweetness without compromising the drink’s refreshing qualities. Experiment to find your perfect balance!

If you’re a fan of spritzes and looking to expand your cocktail repertoire, you might also enjoy this delicious Limoncello Spritz. It’s another fantastic option that’s particularly perfect for warm weather and sunny occasions, offering a delightful citrusy kick.
