The holiday season often brings a whirlwind of cooking and preparation. That’s why I adore straightforward recipes like this Maple Ham Glaze. It requires a mere 5 minutes to whisk together, and best of all, you don’t need to constantly baste the ham unless you choose to! Its “set it and forget it” simplicity means you can spend more time enjoying your loved ones and less time fussing in the kitchen. For optimal flavor penetration and that signature sticky crust, remember to lightly score the ham’s surface before applying the glaze – this allows the delicious flavors to truly meld with the meat.

Why This Maple Ham Glaze Is a Must-Try

This isn’t just any ham glaze; it’s a carefully balanced symphony of flavors designed to elevate your holiday ham from good to gourmet. Maple syrup, a classic autumnal ingredient, provides a deep, natural sweetness that caramelizes beautifully. Brown sugar adds another layer of molasses-rich sweetness and contributes to the glaze’s luscious stickiness. Apple cider introduces a bright, tangy counterpoint, preventing the glaze from becoming overly sweet and adding a subtle fruity complexity. Finally, a touch of Dijon mustard and warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg tie everything together, adding a savory depth and aromatic warmth that is characteristic of festive meals. This combination ensures every bite of your ham is succulent, flavorful, and perfectly balanced, making it a beloved tradition at your holiday table for years to come.

Mastering the Art of Baking a Holiday Ham

Baking a ham for the holidays might seem daunting, but with a few simple guidelines, you can achieve a perfectly cooked, moist, and flavorful centerpiece. Most hams purchased from the store are pre-cooked, meaning you are essentially reheating them to a safe serving temperature while also developing that glorious glazed crust.

Choosing the Right Ham

For glazing, a fully cooked, spiral-sliced ham is often the easiest and most popular choice. The pre-cut slices allow the glaze to seep into the meat, ensuring flavor in every bite, and make carving effortless. Bone-in hams tend to have more flavor and moisture due to the bone marrow, while boneless hams are simpler to slice and often more compact for smaller ovens or gatherings.

Preparing Your Ham for Glazing

Before applying your exquisite maple glaze, it’s beneficial to score the ham. Using a sharp knife, make shallow cuts (about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep) across the fat cap in a diamond pattern. This not only creates a beautiful presentation but also allows the glaze to penetrate deeper into the ham and helps the fat render, creating that desirable crispy, caramelized surface. Some cooks also like to stud each intersection of the diamond pattern with whole cloves for an extra aromatic kick.

How Long Do You Bake A Ham In The Oven?

The baking time for ham primarily depends on whether it’s fully cooked or uncooked, and its size. Since most hams available for holidays are fully cooked and smoked, they primarily need to be reheated. While the label usually provides specific instructions, it’s easy to misplace them. As a general rule:

  • Fully Cooked Whole or Half Hams: Bake at 325 degrees F (160 degrees C) for approximately 18-20 minutes per pound.
  • Uncooked Hams: These require longer cooking times, typically around 20-25 minutes per pound at 325 degrees F (160 degrees C). Always refer to the packaging for precise instructions.

To ensure your ham remains incredibly moist and doesn’t dry out during the long bake, it’s crucial to cover it with aluminum foil. Place the ham on a roasting pan fitted with a rack, and pour at least 1-2 cups of water or apple cider into the bottom of the pan. This creates a steamy environment that keeps the ham succulent. Tent the foil tightly around the ham and the edges of the pan.

Ensuring a Moist and Tender Ham

The key to a moist ham is careful temperature management. Cook the ham until it reaches an internal temperature of about 140 degrees F (60 degrees C) when measured with a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the meat, avoiding the bone. Remember, the safe internal temperature for fully cooked ham is 145 degrees F (63 degrees C), but the ham will continue to cook for several minutes after it’s removed from the oven due to residual heat, a process known as carry-over cooking. Removing it slightly before 145°F helps prevent overcooking and dryness.

When to Apply the Maple Glaze

For the best results, begin glazing your ham during the last 30-60 minutes of the baking process. Apply a generous layer of the glaze every 10-15 minutes, allowing each layer to slightly set and caramelize before adding the next. This layering technique builds up that beautiful, shiny, and sticky crust that everyone loves.

Achieving that Golden, Caramelized Crust

To get that extra crispy, deeply caramelized glazed skin, remove the foil during the final 10-15 minutes of baking. If your oven has a broiler setting, you can even crank up the temperature to 400-450 degrees F (200-230 degrees C) or use the broiler for the very last 3-5 minutes. Watch it carefully to prevent burning; you’re looking for a rich, amber, bubbly finish, not char. This step is optional but highly recommended for an irresistible exterior.

Rest Time: A Crucial Step

After removing the ham from the oven, resist the urge to carve it immediately. Allow the ham to rest, loosely tented with foil, for 15-20 minutes before carving and serving. This crucial resting period allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, resulting in a more tender, flavorful, and moist ham.

Serving Suggestions: What to Pair with Your Maple Glazed Ham

Now that your ham is perfectly glazed and ready, let’s talk about the delicious accompaniments! A maple-glazed ham is wonderfully versatile and pairs beautifully with a wide array of classic holiday side dishes.

Classic Holiday Sides

Consider serving your succulent ham with a generous batch of Garlic Butter Hasselback Potato Bites, their crispy edges and soft interiors a perfect textural contrast. Sweet Candied Yams offer a harmonious balance of sweetness. Fluffy Soft Perfect Yeast Rolls, slathered with rich Herb Butter, are ideal for soaking up any delicious glaze remnants. And for a touch of green with a savory twist, Balsamic Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Bacon offer a delightful blend of smoky, sweet, and tangy flavors (and yes, even more pork!). Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Maple Ham Glaze

Here are some common questions to help you perfect your Maple Ham Glaze and ensure a stress-free holiday meal.

Can I make the glaze ahead of time?

Absolutely! This maple ham glaze is perfect for make-ahead convenience. You can prepare the glaze up to 3-4 days in advance and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to use it, gently reheat it in a saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally, until it’s smooth and pourable again. This allows you to focus on other aspects of your holiday meal on the big day.

What kind of ham is best for glazing?

For optimal results with this glaze, we recommend a fully cooked, spiral-sliced ham. The pre-cut spirals allow the glaze to penetrate deep into the meat, ensuring that every slice is infused with the sweet and savory flavors. A bone-in ham often provides more flavor and moisture, but a boneless ham works just as well if you prefer easier carving.

How do I store leftover glazed ham?

Leftover glazed ham should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator within two hours of serving. It will typically remain fresh for 3-4 days. For longer storage, you can freeze carved ham slices in freezer-safe bags or containers for up to 1-2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating gently to prevent drying out.

Can I adjust the sweetness of the glaze?

Yes, you can easily customize the sweetness of this maple ham glaze to your preference. If you prefer a less sweet glaze, you can reduce the amount of brown sugar by a tablespoon or two, or increase the apple cider slightly. If you enjoy a sweeter glaze, you can add an extra tablespoon of brown sugar or maple syrup. Taste and adjust as you go!

If you’re looking for the most delicious holiday ham, then you need this Maple Ham Glaze recipe! It’s so simple to throw together, and creates the prettiest ham imaginable!

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup apple cider
  • 3 tablespoons dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 6-8 pound fully cooked spiral sliced ham

Instructions

To Make the Ham Glaze:

  • In a medium saucepan set over medium-high heat, combine the maple syrup, brown sugar, apple cider, mustard, and spices. Bring the mixture to a boil for about 2 minutes, then remove from heat.

To Use It On A Ham:

  • Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (160 degrees C). Pour 2 cups of water or apple cider into the bottom of a roasting pan with a roasting rack.
  • Remove the ham from its packaging and place it, cut side-down, on the roasting rack. Score the fat in a diamond pattern, cutting to a depth of about 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Stud each “X” intersection with whole cloves if desired for added aroma.
  • Tent the ham with foil, wrapping it securely around the edges of the roasting pan to keep the steam in. This creates a moist environment for baking. Bake the ham in the preheated oven for approximately 20 minutes per pound (e.g., 2 hours for a 6-pound ham), or until a meat thermometer registers at least 140 degrees F (60 degrees C) in the thickest part.
  • During the last 30-60 minutes of the bake time, remove the foil tent. Every 10-15 minutes, baste the ham generously with the prepared maple glaze, returning the ham to the oven uncovered after each basting.
  • For an extra caramelized crust, during the final 10 minutes of baking, brush with any remaining glaze and increase the oven temperature to 400-450 degrees F (200-230 degrees C) or switch to a high broil setting. Broil for 3-5 minutes, watching carefully to ensure the glaze caramelizes to a rich golden brown without burning.
  • Allow the ham to rest for at least 15-20 minutes after removing it from the oven before carving and serving. This allows the juices to redistribute, ensuring a tender and flavorful ham.
