A Sweet Nostalgia: The Universal Love for Donuts
Donuts hold a special place in the hearts of many, often tied to childhood memories and weekend traditions. For me, Saturdays often meant a box of plain donuts from Country Kitchen, a simple pleasure that marked the beginning of the weekend. While those classic, unadorned rings had their charm, I always gravitated towards the more extravagant offerings of the local bakery – the glistening glazed donuts or the unique, cinnamon-infused Persian donuts. My friends from Central Maine will undoubtedly know the distinct deliciousness I’m talking about!
This recipe, however, takes that nostalgic love for donuts and elevates it to an entirely new level. While it might be a stretch to classify these as a breakfast item (though no one’s stopping you from trying!), they are undeniably perfect for a special treat, a decadent dessert, or an impressive addition to any brunch spread. The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and speed, proving that extraordinary treats don’t always require hours in the kitchen.

The Magic of Puff Pastry: Flaky Perfection, Simplified
The secret weapon in this recipe is, without a doubt, puff pastry dough. This incredible ingredient eliminates the need for messy yeast dough, lengthy proofing times, and deep-frying. Puff pastry, a marvel of French baking, achieves its signature light, airy, and flaky layers through a meticulous process of folding butter into dough. When baked, these layers separate, creating an exquisite texture that perfectly encases the rich, creamy Reese’s peanut butter cup filling.
Using pre-made, thawed puff pastry sheets means you can achieve gourmet-level results with minimal effort. It’s a convenient shortcut that doesn’t compromise on taste or texture, making it an ideal choice for both experienced bakers and those new to the kitchen. The crisp, buttery shell provides a delightful contrast to the gooey chocolate and peanut butter center, making every bite a symphony of textures and flavors. It’s truly a testament to how simple ingredients can come together to create something truly spectacular.
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups: The Irresistible Heart of the Donut
What could be better than a donut? A donut stuffed with a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, of course! The iconic combination of milk chocolate and smooth, savory peanut butter is a pairing beloved by millions. Incorporating these candies directly into the center of the puff pastry donuts transforms a simple treat into a truly indulgent experience. As the donuts bake, the Reese’s cups melt slightly, creating a warm, gooey, and utterly divine core that oozes with every bite.
This inspired filling choice elevates the flavor profile, adding a layer of creamy, salty-sweet goodness that complements the flaky pastry perfectly. It’s a creative way to enjoy a classic candy, turning it into the star of a sophisticated (yet easy!) dessert. And let’s be honest, who can resist the allure of a hidden treasure of chocolate and peanut butter?

Whip Up Decadence in Minutes: Why This Recipe is a Must-Try
One of the most appealing aspects of these Reese’s Stuffed Puff Pastry Donuts is their incredible ease and speed. Essential Tips for Perfect Puff Pastry Donuts
Achieving perfectly flaky and delicious Reese’s Stuffed Puff Pastry Donuts is surprisingly simple, especially with a few helpful tips:
- Thawing the Puff Pastry: Ensure your puff pastry sheets are properly thawed but still cold. This is crucial for easy handling and to maintain the pastry’s delicate layers. If it gets too warm, the butter can melt out, resulting in a less flaky texture.
- Flour Your Surface: Always work on a lightly floured surface to prevent the pastry from sticking. A little extra flour on your rolling pin can also help.
- Sealing is Key: When placing the second pastry circle on top of the Reese’s cup, make sure to firmly crimp the edges together with a fork. This creates a secure seal, preventing the melted peanut butter cup from oozing out during baking and ensuring a beautiful, puffy donut.
- Don’t Overfill: While tempting, stick to one standard Reese’s cup per donut. Overfilling can make sealing difficult and lead to leakage.
- Golden Brown Perfection: Keep a close eye on the oven. Puff pastry bakes quickly and can go from perfectly golden to burnt in a flash. Look for a light golden-brown color on the tops for optimal flakiness.
- Cooling Time: Allow the donuts to cool on the baking sheet for at least 10 minutes before handling. This helps them set and prevents the filling from being too molten, making them easier to dip and enjoy.
Creative Variations & Serving Suggestions
While these Reese’s Stuffed Puff Pastry Donuts are phenomenal as is, don’t hesitate to get creative and customize them to your liking:
- Different Fillings: Experiment with other small candies like mini Snickers, Caramello squares, or even a dollop of Nutella or jam.
- Glaze Options: Beyond chocolate sauce, consider a simple vanilla glaze (powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract), a maple glaze, or a peanut butter drizzle made from melted peanut butter.
- Topping Galore: In addition to chocolate sprinkles, try rainbow sprinkles, chopped nuts, toasted coconut flakes, mini chocolate chips, or a dusting of powdered sugar.
- Serving: Serve these warm for a truly gooey experience, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an à la mode dessert. They also make a fantastic addition to a dessert platter for parties or a special weekend brunch. Pair them with a hot cup of coffee, a glass of milk, or even a scoop of ice cream.
These donuts are perfect for any occasion, from a festive holiday gathering to a cozy night in. Their elegant appearance belies their simple preparation, making them a dessert that’s sure to impress without the stress.

These Reese’s Stuffed Puff Pastry Donuts are rich, decadent, and easy to make! Just 6 ingredients stand between you and chocolate/peanut butter bliss!
Ingredients
- 2 puff pastry sheets, thawed
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon water
- 11 regular Reese’s peanut butter cups
- 1 cup chocolate sauce
- Chocolate sprinkles
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
-
Unfold the pastry sheets on a clean, lightly floured surface. Using a 3-inch round cookie cutter, cut out 9 circles of dough from each sheet.
-
In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to create an egg wash. Use a basting brush to lightly brush this egg wash around the outer edge of 9 of the dough circles.
-
Unwrap 9 Reese’s peanut butter cups and place one in the center of each of the egg-washed dough circles. The remaining two cups will be used later for topping.
-
Carefully place the remaining 9 dough circles on top of the Reese’s cups, aligning them with the bottom circles. Use a fork to firmly crimp and seal the edges of the two dough pieces together, all around the Reese’s cup. This helps prevent the filling from leaking during baking.
-
Arrange the assembled donuts on the parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for approximately 13-15 minutes, or until the tops are lightly golden brown and the pastry is puffed and flaky.
-
Once baked, let the donuts cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes before moving them. This allows the filling to set slightly.
-
To finish, dip the tops of the cooled donuts in chocolate sauce, then generously sprinkle with chocolate sprinkles. Finely chop the two reserved Reese’s peanut butter cups and scatter them over the top of the donuts for an extra touch of chocolate-peanut butter goodness. Serve warm or at room temperature.
