They capture all the beloved sweet and salty flavors of the traditional “Christmas Crack” treat, but with the innovative addition of a brown butter chocolate chip cookie as their foundation. This simple switch transforms the classic, making it truly irresistible!
Elevating the base of this iconic treat from a simple cracker to a rich, flavorful cookie truly makes this the ultimate Christmas crack recipe. After all, when it comes to desserts, it’s widely agreed that cookies inherently improve everything they touch, and this recipe is no exception!
The Unforgettable Taste and Texture of Christmas Crack Cookies
Taste: Each bite of these Christmas Crack Cookies is an explosion of complementary flavors. You’ll first experience the deep, nutty richness of the brown butter chocolate chip cookie, perfectly balanced by the subtle crunch and saltiness of crushed saltine crackers, and the sweet, chewy delight of buttery toffee bits. This complex flavor profile creates a truly unforgettable treat that marries sweet, salty, and savory notes.
Crowning this delightful cookie is a generous layer of smoothly melted chocolate, providing a luscious sweetness. This is then adorned with additional buttery toffee bits, offering extra chewiness, alongside perfectly toasted pecans for a warm, earthy crunch, and a festive sprinkle of holiday decorations for a touch of whimsy and color. The combination is pure holiday magic.
Texture: Beyond their incredible flavor, these cookies boast a diverse and satisfying array of textures. The cookie base itself is designed to be slightly crisp on the bottoms and edges, providing a delightful snap. The interior remains wonderfully chewy, offering a satisfying bite. This is beautifully complemented by the creamy, melted chocolate, the delightful chew of toffee, and the distinct, satisfying crunch of toasted pecans. Every element contributes to a complex textural experience that keeps you coming back for more.

Understanding the Appeal of Christmas Crack
Christmas Crack is renowned for its incredibly addictive quality, a direct result of its perfect salty-sweet balance and satisfying crunch. The traditional version typically uses a cracker base, with saltine or Ritz crackers being the most common choices, and sometimes even graham crackers for a slightly different flavor profile. The genius of “Christmas Crack” lies in its simplicity and the sheer joy it brings.
The crackers form the structural foundation of the treat, which is then generously covered with a rich topping made from melted toffee bits and chocolate. From this basic structure, home bakers and confectioners get creative. Everyone seems to have their preferred way to finish off this beloved holiday confection, with toppings ranging from festive sprinkles and finely chopped nuts to crushed peppermint candies for a minty kick, or even an elegant drizzle of white chocolate to add another layer of sweetness and visual appeal. The versatility makes it a perfect canvas for holiday creativity.
In this particular variation, we’ve introduced a game-changing element by trading the conventional cracker base for a homemade cookie. This innovative substitution transforms the classic treat into something even more special, making it incredibly hard to resist. The soft, chewy cookie infused with brown butter and chocolate chips provides a rich backdrop that elevates the salty-sweet combination to new heights, solidifying its place as a holiday favorite that will disappear quickly!

Mastering Christmas Crack Cookies: Expert Baking Tips
Creating these sensational Christmas Crack Cookies is a straightforward process, especially with these helpful tips designed to ensure perfect results every time:
- Correctly Measure Your Flour – Accurate flour measurement is paramount to avoid dry, crumbly cookies. Improperly measured flour is a common pitfall in baking. Measuring Flour precisely can be achieved using the “spoon and level” method with a standard measuring cup, or for the most accurate results, with a kitchen scale (affiliate link). This small detail makes a huge difference in the final texture of your cookies.
- Brown The Butter to Perfection – Browning butter adds an incredible depth of nutty, caramelized flavor that elevates these cookies. When browning the butter, start by slicing the butter into smaller pieces. This ensures a faster and more even melt, preventing some parts from burning while others are still melting. Your brown butter is ready when distinct brown bits form at the bottom of the pan, the top becomes lightly foamy, and a rich, nutty aroma fills your kitchen. This aroma is your cue to remove it from the heat.
- Embrace Interval Mixing for Superior Texture – You’ll notice the recipe instructs you to mix the dough for 30 seconds, then allow it to rest for 3 minutes, repeating this process two more times. Do not skip this unique stirring method! It is crucial for achieving perfectly tender and chewy cookies. This interval mixing allows the residual heat from the browned butter to gently melt the sugars, creating a smooth, stable emulsion with the eggs. This process develops the dough’s structure, resulting in an exceptionally soft and uniform cookie.
- Consider Your Cookie Size – This Christmas cookie recipe is designed to produce generously sized cookies, typically around 4 to 5 inches in diameter, making them wonderfully substantial. If you prefer smaller, more bite-sized cookies, simply use a medium cookie scoop instead of a large one. Adjust the baking time accordingly, aiming for 7 to 9 minutes, until the edges are lightly golden and the centers are just set.
- Utilize Two Baking Sheets – We highly recommend using two baking sheets for baking in batches. This practice is essential to prevent placing raw cookie dough onto a hot baking sheet that has just come out of the oven. A hot baking sheet can cause the cookie dough to spread too rapidly, altering the cookies’ structure and resulting in a flatter, less chewy texture. Using a cool baking sheet ensures consistent baking and maintains the desired soft, chewy consistency.

These Christmas Crack Cookies are an absolute must-add to your annual holiday cookie swap container! Their unique flavor and delightful texture will surely make them a standout. Beyond these beauties, be sure to tuck in some other fun and festive cookies to create a varied and exciting assortment. Consider including charming Reindeer Cookies, which are always a hit, and vibrant red and green Heart-Shaped Grinch Cookies to add a playful touch.
To further enhance your cookie tin’s variety, we also recommend adding a few delicate Linzer Cookies, known for their elegant appearance and fruity filling. And for a refreshing minty twist, a batch of Chocolate Mint Cookies With Andes Mints is always a welcome addition. After all, the best cookie tins are all about offering a wide range of flavors and experiences, ensuring there’s a favorite for everyone!
Storing Your Christmas Crack Cookies
To keep these delicious cookies fresh and enjoyable, store them in an airtight container at room temperature. When stored properly, they will retain their wonderful taste and texture for up to 3 days, making them perfect for preparing ahead of time or enjoying over a few festive days.
Can I Substitute Salted Butter in This Christmas Cookie Recipe?
Yes, you can absolutely use salted butter in place of unsalted butter in this recipe. If you choose to do so, simply omit the 1 teaspoon of salt that the recipe calls for. Salted butter typically contains about ¼ teaspoon of salt per stick, which will contribute enough seasoning to the cookies, ensuring they remain perfectly balanced in flavor.
Do I Brown All of the Butter in This Recipe?
No, it’s crucial that you do not brown all of the butter. Doing so would significantly alter the recipe’s balance and the final texture of the cookies. Instead, only 10 tablespoons of the butter are browned to develop that rich, nutty flavor. The remaining 4 tablespoons are simply melted into the browned butter off the heat, ensuring the perfect fat content and moisture level for a tender, chewy cookie.
Can I Add Nuts Directly to the Cookie Dough?
Absolutely! Adding nuts directly into the cookie dough is a wonderful way to enhance the flavor and texture of these Christmas Crack Cookies. Feel free to stir in additional pecan pieces for an extra layer of nutty crunch, or experiment by adding a different type of chopped nut of your choice, such as walnuts or almonds, to personalize your batch.
Why is Rotating the Cookie Sheet During Baking Important?
Rotating your cookie sheet halfway through the baking process is a simple yet effective technique for achieving a much more even bake across all your cookies. Ovens often have hot spots, causing cookies on one side of the tray to bake faster than others. By rotating the sheet, you ensure that all cookies are exposed to similar heating conditions, allowing them to come out wonderfully chewy and perfectly cooked, rather than having some overcooked and others underbaked.
Can I Freeze This Cookie Dough for Future Baking?
Yes, this cookie dough freezes exceptionally well, making it a perfect make-ahead option, especially during the busy holiday season! To freeze the dough, first portion it out into individual cookie balls onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Transfer the baking sheet to the freezer to flash-freeze the dough balls for about an hour, until firm. Afterward, remove the baking sheet, place the frozen cookie dough balls into a freezer-safe Ziploc bag, squeezing out any excess air. Store the bag of frozen cookie dough in the freezer for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to bake, you can cook the cookies directly from frozen, but you will need to add an extra minute or two to the baking time to ensure they are thoroughly cooked.

Ingredients
- 2 cups + 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (270g)
- 2 tablespoons powdered milk (12g)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 14 tablespoons unsalted butter (196g) sliced into tablespoons and divided
- ½ cup granulated sugar (100g)
- ¾ cup light brown sugar (150g) packed
- 1 tablespoon light corn syrup
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 large egg room temperature
- 1 large egg yolk room temperature
- 10 Saltine crackers crushed
- 1 cup bits o brickle toffee bits plus more for topping
- ½ cup pecan pieces optional topping
- 12 ounces chocolate chips
- Holiday sprinkles
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. It is best if you use two baking sheets and rotate them for the batches. Dropping the second batch of dough on a hot cookie sheet will slightly change the structure of the cookie.
-
Pull the butter out of the refrigerator to sit at room temperature 15 minutes before using.
-
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking soda, and powdered milk. Set aside.
-
Add 10 tablespoons of butter to a skillet and cook over medium heat until melted. Continue cooking and stirring frequently for 2 to 3 minutes until brown bits start to form in the bottom of the pan, the top is foamy, and it has a nutty aroma. Remove from heat and stir in the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter until melted. Transfer the butter to a large heat-safe bowl or stand mixer bowl fitted with a whisk attachment.
-
Add the granulated sugar, light brown sugar, corn syrup, and vanilla extract to the butter and mix to combine.
-
Add the egg and additional egg yolk and mix for 30 seconds. Let rest for 3 minutes, then whisk again for 30 seconds. Repeat the resting and whisking for 2 more rounds. The batter should be smooth, thick, and shiny when done – almost like caramel sauce.
-
Use a rubber spatula or paddle attachment to mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients for 1 minute. The dough will seem very soft, this is normal and you do not need to chill it.
-
Fold in most of the toffee bits and crushed saltine crackers.
-
Portion the dough out with a large (¼ cup sized) cookie scoop and drop the dough 3 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.
-
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, rotating halfway through. The cookies should look slightly cracked and only slightly brown around the edge. Remove from the oven and allow the cookies to cool for 3 minutes on the baking sheet before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
-
While the cookies are cooling, add the pecans to a small bowl and microwave for 1 minute, stir, then microwave for 30 additional seconds to give the pecans a slightly toasted flavor.
-
Once the cookies cool, melt the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl at 30-second intervals, stirring between each one until fully melted.
-
Spoon the melted chocolate onto the tops of the cooled cookies and spread to cover most of the top.
-
Sprinkle the finely chopped pecan pieces on the melted chocolate along with extra toffee bits and holiday sprinkles if desired. Let the chocolate set before enjoying.
Notes
- I highly recommend using a kitchen scale to measure your ingredients for a consistently successful batch of cookies!
- Do not brown all of the butter; only 10 tablespoons should be browned. It’s important that the remaining 4 tablespoons are only melted and not cooked to the point of clarifying or browning, as this will alter the recipe’s intended outcome.
- Slicing the butter into smaller pieces before melting will ensure a faster and more even browning process.
- This recipe makes large cookies, approximately 4 to 5 inches in size. If you prefer to make smaller cookies, use a medium cookie scoop and adjust the baking time to 7 to 9 minutes.
- You’ll notice this recipe calls for chopped chocolate rather than regular chocolate chips. We prefer chopped chocolate for the delightful flecks it creates throughout the dough and the generous pools of rich chocolate it forms after baking. However, standard chocolate chips can certainly be used as an alternative.
- Nutritional information provided is an estimate and does not include any optional chocolate melting wafers used for topping.
- Store these delicious cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. They are best enjoyed within 3 days to maintain optimal freshness.
- Can I Add Nuts To These Cookies? Absolutely! Feel free to incorporate any chopped nut you prefer into these Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies for added flavor and crunch, such as walnuts or almonds.
- Does This Cookie Dough Freeze Well? Yes, it does! To freeze the cookie dough, first portion out the dough into balls onto a baking sheet. Then, place the baking sheet into the freezer for about an hour to flash-freeze the dough. Afterward, transfer the frozen cookie dough balls into a Ziploc bag, ensuring all excess air is squeezed out. Store the bag in the freezer for up to 3 months. When ready to bake, you can bake the cookies directly from frozen, but you will need to add an extra minute or two to the suggested baking time.
- Can I Use Salted Butter In This Recipe Instead Of Unsalted? Yes, that’s perfectly fine. If you opt to use salted butter, simply omit the 1 teaspoon of additional salt specified in the recipe.
